Stalins kossor - Sofi Oksanen

Book

Books can be read just for entertainment, sometimes you read the for the facts this book you read because it takes you in its grip and holds you there. Its not a fun book, you can even say that it it quiet disgusting. But it is real, naked and you can't not be touched by it.

"Stalins kossor" or "Stalin's cows" as it's called in English is written by Sofi Oksanen, original language is Finnish. It's about Anna, a woman with severe eating disorders. It's about her, how she got sick, about her mother in 1970' Estonia and her grandmother in 1940' Estonia. The name Stalin's cows refers to the name that the deported Estonians gave to the bony goats from Siberia, it also refers to people today with severe eating disorders.

The book is right on target, and I recommend all to read it, Sofi Oksanen is one of the most talented writers I have ever read. And I know I said that about Scarlett Thomas but this woman is way out of her league. This book doesn't entertain, it captivates.

PopCo - Scarlett Thomas

PopCo

Just finished reading PopCo by Scarlett Thomas, this book is great!

I found Scarlett Thomas work by a fluke, wanted to start reading different genres then I'm used to, to evolve in my reading. Went in to Pocket Shop and saw "The End of Mr Y" in the top selection, I liked the cover so I bought it. You shouldn't judge a book by its cover but this book was great.

So this is the second book by Scarlett Thomas that I've read and I must say it definitely is in the same league as the previous one.

The book is about Alice Butler, her life and cryptography. Me being a knowledge junkie really loved all the references to just cryptography, the book also takes on the controversy in marketing among other things. You should really read it! Don't want to say to much about it in case I ruin it for someone, but I must say this. Scarlett Thomas have now landed high in my top ten authors list, I think at the moment she probably even tops it. So find your copy and start reading!

Over and out!
